Chapter 32

“So, they’re really going to go through with this?” Jimmy Bradley asked.

“Yep,” said Dotson, grabbing a small, hard plastic case from the storage cabinet inside the CROCUTA CITY control room.

“I thought you said we wouldn’t have to deal with them again.”

“You won’t. You’re going to stay here and monitor the hyenas and pits.”

“What about Trey?” Bradley asked.

“He’s going to be in the BETA CITY control room manning the control panel. He won’t go outside.”

“Wait a minute. I’m the head trainer. If anybody’s going to be around those things, it’s going to be me.”

Dotson turned to him. “I appreciate that, Jimmy, but Douglas has been working with those things since day one. He has twice as much experience with them as you do and more of a handle on how they act and react. We’re going to need every bit of that knowledge during this dog and pony show.”

“What about Cathy?”

“She’ll be there.”

“But I don’t want her—”

Dotson lifted a hand. “That’s direct from your boss.”

Bradley scowled. “I thought you were my boss.”

The big man chuckled. “That ship sailed a while back.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means priorities are changing, Jimmy. Besides, I have a feeling this is going to be the last demonstration.”

“You mean with the betas?”

Dotson hesitated, then said, “Yeah.”

“Where is Cathy, anyway?”

“At the beta compound, prepping,” Dotson said.

“Is Tammy helping her?”

“You really are behind on current events. After Corporal Tammy Grimes got done throwing her guts up in the BETA CITY bathroom last week, she requested immediate transfer back to her old unit.”

Bradley threw up his hands. “Why am I always the last to know what’s going on around here? I mean, I’m only the lead trainer.” He paced the room for a second, then turned back to Dotson. “You said priorities are changing. Does that include the outcome for the animals?”

“What do you mean?”

“What I mean is that when I first started working with the pits, you assured me that SPAAD does everything in its power to ensure the animals make it back from their missions. In fact, that was a condition of me working for the government. It’s obvious you can’t do that with the betas. You can’t even get them back in their kennels, so you’re definitely not going to get them back from an op. Now we’re holding a demonstration of them. To me, that means that you, the program, plans to keep them around. And if the program will sacrifice the betas, they’ll sacrifice any of the animals.”

The muscular man tilted his head and gave Bradley a crooked smile. “You finally going to ask the question, Jimmy?”

Bradley drew in a breath, then slowly nodded. “I think you just gave me my answer.”

“You’re a smart guy, Jimmy,” Dotson said walking to the door. “You need to think about cutting your losses. Maybe open your own business.”
